On the anniversary of September 11th, a day that will go down in history, we take time to reflect on our own lives and give back to those less fortunate. We will never forget those brave heroes who sacrificed their lives to save others. It’s all about giving back. New 2 NY Tours is a huge supporter and advocate of fighting hunger and feeding the homeless. We have dedicated our time to cooking and teaching nutrition classes in low income community centers and health clinics in the Bronx through the City Harvest Nutrition Program. City Harvest is the largest food rescue program in all of New York City- “rescuing food for nearly 2 million New Yorkers facing hunger every year” and we are so honored to be a part of their community. It has been the most rewarding volunteer program that has touched our lives in many way. Never before has a person showed so much gratification and appreciation for small amounts of food and the lessons they learn to help prevent diabetes, eat healthy, reduce salt and fat intake, and be conscious about foods that trigger health problems.

As part of our efforts, New 2 NY Tours is planning a charity event fundraiser on September 19th at 6pm at Stag’s Head on 51st street and 2nd Ave. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to City Harvest. If you are interested in donating or attending this event, please sign up here. A small amount of money goes a long way, and you can be part of supporting a great cause!

We have also been blessed with the opportunity to raise awareness about City Harvest through Chicken Soup for the Soul. A few months ago, we entered a contest asking to describe a meaningful cooking experience. Of course we submitted our essay on the emotional and rewarding benefits we receive from cooking for those less fortunate with City Harvest. We were ecstatic when we got the phone call that we were one of the selected candidates out of the many applicants that WON the contest to host a dinner party using Chicken Soup for the Soul’s new food products! This was the perfect opportunity to help bring awareness to City Harvest! We will be preparing and cooking a meal for 6 people. The menu includes, tomato soup with onion croutons, 2 recipes from Chicken Soup for the Soul including Mediterranean Pasta- Vegetable Salad and Sesame Ginger Stir- Fry, along with  sautéed mushroom and broccoli side dishes. We encouraged our guests to bring the wine and dessert. Stay tuned for our next blog post with the cooking and eating pictures!

  • Save our City!

    Save our City!

Do we want a Homogenized NYC?

    IMG_3904

Say it ain’t so! Gentrification has reared its ugly head once again taking over the New York City’s unique culture and has put a damper on symbolic traditions throughout our neighborhoods. What was once been considered the melting pot of the world has become more and more homogenized. The fabric of our city is constantly changing and undergoing modern construction projects, and no one cares to talk to the community to see how this effects them. Do we really want to be labeled as a “Giant Shopping Mall” with large commercial corporations like Starbucks and Duane Reade’s on every corner? It’s a sad reality that our city is losing its unique flavor.

Recently DNAinfo.com reported on Jim “Mosaic Man” Power, the mastermind behind the beautiful colorful lamppost mosaics around Astor Place and The East Village. He started designing the mosaics in 1987 and in a form of protest, he would rather tear down his own artwork than to see it destroyed by a $16 Million redesign of Astor Place. When times were bad, the mosaic acted as a symbol of hope to light the way. There were even mosaics to commemorate history and influential public figures like Susan B Anthony and President Bill Clinton. Everyone was familiar with Power’s work. He was a local celebrity. Power’s Mosaic, and other creative artistic works, are the fabric of what makes NYC so unique.

    IMG_3906IMG_3908

If all neighborhoods start looking and feeling the same our city will be boring! With nothing to differentiate one neighborhood from the rest, individuality will be erased. There won’t be any unique characteristics defining a neighborhood as the East Village compared to the West Village. I had an opportunity to speak with Jimmy Webb, manager at Trash and Vaudeville, a Rock & Roll, Punk Rock inspired clothing Store on St. Marks that has been in business since 1975. He says the same spirit lies in the walls of the store, but the neighborhood has drastically changed over the years. “I don’t see any more diversity. It used to be so colorful. Now it’s all the same,” he told me. “I miss music stores, the records, the people, and the different types of food. Everything has become modernized.” He chocked up a little when we spoke of the mosaics being torn down. “Why is the city taking this all away? There is no authenticity of the spirit on NYC any more. It’s just not cool.”

As a native NYer, who has lived and breathed NYC over the past decade, I have witnessed this city transform into something completely unoriginal. It used to have so much flavor. I agree that we need to clean up the city, but never imagined that the mayor and the city would go to such extremes as to remove the very beginnings of what made the East Village the hippest neighborhood in the city.

It’s the same thing with erasing 5 Pointz in Queens. I was there the week before it was painted white. I was blown away by what I saw and the talent that was portrayed in these walls were incomprehensible. Each mural told a story and each story told the tale of the importance and value of our artistic culture. It was torn down, in the same way the East Village history has been wiped away, leaving a trail of history to fade into the background.

Why would they want to take away the beauty that makes NYC so special? What is the vision for New York City? Is this for the better or for worse? At the end of the day the mom and pop shops are being squeezed out all over the city because they cannot afford the rents and all the neighborhoods will eventually look and feel the same and the old traditions will just be a shadow of the past. We need to work together as a community and support the smaller shops.

    We are ONE!

Since we cater to small private groups, we strive to interact with each guest to learn their background and culture. We are genuinely interested in who they are as a person. Everyone has a unique story to tell and every one of our guests add so much value, love, and color to our tours. It is more important for us to share our real life stories and not focus on bombarding travelers with relentless facts. It is more about creating a connection, supporting the local mom and pop shops, and building a community. The best part about this NEW style of tours is we hug each of our guests when we say our goodbyes as if we have known each other for many years. It’s that comfortable! Whether you are from London, German, China, or even NYC, every one deserves a hug! We meet people on our tours who have lived in the city for many years. They tell us how surprised they are that they are STILL learning something about the city they never knew. This is when we know we are doing our job! People come in from around the world and many want to see the typical tourist attractions, but we want to give our guests the REAL NY experience, we call it Living La Vida LOCAL or “Live Like a Local.”   We are bringing back the human side of tourism!  It may not be what you are used to, the company may have a different vision of what tourism is all about, but that’s why we are NEW 2 NY Tours and that’s what makes us unique! Please join us on a tour anytime!

  • The Secret Gardens of NYC

    The Secret Gardens of NYC

Welcome to the lush oases hidden among the concrete jungle of New York City!

The gates have been open, but only temporarily…

Good ol’ New York New York. The Best City in the world. When you think of the city of New York, “The City that Never Sleeps,” or “The Big Apple” and of course the “Empire State” the most appropriate nickname that comes to mind is “The Concrete Jungle” for all the sidewalks and skyscrapers made of concrete and all the 8 million people that walk the streets daily. You will be surprised to learn that there are more than 500 or 3% of NYC is made up of lush green landscapes and beautiful thriving gardens like you would see in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. New York City is the city that is always in motion. The people are always in a hurry rushing off to get somewhere, there is always something that needed to get done (yesterday) that they don’t take a moment to stop and smell the flowers.

As a native NYer myself, it’s truly remarkable all the information I learned about the NYC landscape, that I never knew before. For instance the Native Americans that inhabited this land before the Dutch named it Manhattan meaning “land of many hills.” Who would have known that Manhattan is hilly? Seems pretty flat to me. Also a lot of the barren land was going to be used for development sites until the community and Green Thumb and other federations spoke up and protested. This encouraged the local community to come together and create these magnificent gardens.

We are so honored to take our guests around the city and see their eyes light up as they discover something new for the first time! One guest told us that she lived in NYC for 50 years and never knew some of these gardens even existed!

The Garden Tours will encourage you to open your eyes, really SEE your surroundings, and appreciate what NYC has to offer. Please check out the website for details New 2 NY Tours. Join us on Sundays, August 24th, September 14th, and September 21st to unlock a world of beauty in our own backyard. The Summer is NOT over yet! Enjoy every moment!
