On the anniversary of September 11th, a day that will go down in history, we take time to reflect on our own lives and give back to those less fortunate. We will never forget those brave heroes who sacrificed their lives to save others. It’s all about giving back. New 2 NY Tours is a huge supporter and advocate of fighting hunger and feeding the homeless. We have dedicated our time to cooking and teaching nutrition classes in low income community centers and health clinics in the Bronx through the City Harvest Nutrition Program. City Harvest is the largest food rescue program in all of New York City- “rescuing food for nearly 2 million New Yorkers facing hunger every year” and we are so honored to be a part of their community. It has been the most rewarding volunteer program that has touched our lives in many way. Never before has a person showed so much gratification and appreciation for small amounts of food and the lessons they learn to help prevent diabetes, eat healthy, reduce salt and fat intake, and be conscious about foods that trigger health problems.
As part of our efforts, New 2 NY Tours is planning a charity event fundraiser on September 19th at 6pm at Stag’s Head on 51st street and 2nd Ave. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to City Harvest. If you are interested in donating or attending this event, please sign up here. A small amount of money goes a long way, and you can be part of supporting a great cause!
We have also been blessed with the opportunity to raise awareness about City Harvest through Chicken Soup for the Soul. A few months ago, we entered a contest asking to describe a meaningful cooking experience. Of course we submitted our essay on the emotional and rewarding benefits we receive from cooking for those less fortunate with City Harvest. We were ecstatic when we got the phone call that we were one of the selected candidates out of the many applicants that WON the contest to host a dinner party using Chicken Soup for the Soul’s new food products! This was the perfect opportunity to help bring awareness to City Harvest! We will be preparing and cooking a meal for 6 people. The menu includes, tomato soup with onion croutons, 2 recipes from Chicken Soup for the Soul including Mediterranean Pasta- Vegetable Salad and Sesame Ginger Stir- Fry, along with sautéed mushroom and broccoli side dishes. We encouraged our guests to bring the wine and dessert. Stay tuned for our next blog post with the cooking and eating pictures!
